Nursing pads: All you need to know
Today we will discuss the importance of nursing pads and answer a few questions that may help you out when deciding how to choose the right pads. In order to do so, we will give some background information towards the need for breastfeeding pads. Towards the final weeks of your pregnancy and the early days of nursing, your body will start to prepare and adapt to the process of producing sufficient milk for your new-born. Before your body and breasts have settled into a schedule, your breasts will often release milk without warning. This is often referred to as leaking. Even after your body has adapted to the milk production stages, your body will still release milk without warning. These so-called let-downs are commonly triggered by various factors ranging between physical and emotional situations.

Nursing pads are extremely useful in these situations when the unintended leaks occur. The breast pads are able to absorb any milk that has been released from your breasts, which can help prevent damp circles that surface around your nipples. Breastfeeding pads are also useful in the sense that they protect your clothing from becoming stained from any inadvertent events that occur. In order to understand nursing pads clearly, we have a few topics, questions and answers that circulate around the topic of washable pads, eco-friendly pads, and disposable nursing pads. Moving forward, we will cover following areas.
  • Choosing between disposable and washable (reusable) nursing pads
  • The different materials that come with nursing pads
  • How often should you change between nursing pads?
  • Does MAGIC Bodyfashion offer any reliable nursing pads

Choosing between disposable and washable (reusable) nursing pads

For starters, you have the option to choose between disposable orwashable (reusable) nursing pads. Disposable breastfeeding pads are often made of a thin absorbent material. They usually have a sticky back to adhere them on your bra, which can be convenient but also can result to hindering or obstructing the breathability. Once the disposable nursing pads become wet or damp, simply toss them in the garbage and pull out a new set of disposable breast pads.

Disposable nursing pads advantages:
  • Convenient
  • Adhesive
  • Thinner material (subtle under clothes)
Disposable nursing pads disadvantages:
  • Not eco-friendly
  • Recurrent expense
On the other hand, you can choose washable (reusable) nursing pads. Washable breastfeeding pads are typically eco-friendly, cost effective, and breathable. Since they are made of natural fibres, the reusable nursing pads often result towards better air circulation, ventilation, and breathability. For this reason, we suggest you keep an eye out for bamboo washable nursing pads or eco-friendly nursing pads! These pads can help with the healing process that some women may experience when having sore nipples from breastfeeding. Rather than disposing the breastfeeding pads, you are able to easily wash and reuse the breast pads. Not only will you be saving the environment by reusing your washable nursing pads, but you will also be saving money as well!

Washable nursing pads advantages:
  • Eco-friendly
  • Cost-efficient
  • Breathable
Washable nursing pads disadvantages:
  • Thicker material (less subtle under clothes)
  • Non-adhesive

The different materials that come with nursing pads

Breastfeeding pads come in all different shapes, sizes and materials. Nursing pad materials can range between cotton, bamboo (eco-friendly), silicone, hydrogel and homemade pads. Choosing nursing pads that are comfortable, fluid absorbent and made of soft cotton is always a good guideline to follow. The quality of the material on the nursing pads can cause irritated nipples that can lead to discomfort. Let’s take a look at the different materials that come with nursing pads.

Bamboo (eco-friendly) nursing pads are made of soft and breathable fabric that allows for clear ventilation and prevents skin irritation. The materials are typically made from bamboo or cotton which makes them ultra soft and extra-absorbent.

Silicone nursing pads are usually made of soft silicone that have sticky surface areas that adhere to your breasts. Silicone breast pads do not absorb any leaks, this is because the material is made from silicone. They do however prevent fluids from leaking from the pads that are stuck to the breasts.

Hydrogel nursing pads are specifically used for pain relief issues that you may experience when breastfeeding. Hydrogel pads have a protective cooling cushion made of hydrogel that is attached to your skin to help heal your nipple pain. You can reuse the pads within a 24-hour period, just be sure to store it in a cool, clean and dry space. There is no need to wash it with soap or cleanser!

Homemade nursing pads can be made from a variety of household items. Napkins, cotton materials, sanitary pads or even diapers can be used to make homemade nursing pads! Simply cut the material into a circular shape, perhaps with a few layers and you have yourself a set of homemade breastfeeding pads. Don’t forget that the material used must be fluid absorbent and skin friendly, for this reason we suggest that using disposable or washable nursing pads are a safer and better choice!

How often should you change between nursing pads?

There is no exact answer to this question, purely because your body and breasts will react differently each time you experience leaking. However, you must always change or wash the nursing pads once they become damp or wet. If the pads are damp and you leave them on for longer, you will begin to experience nipple irritation, which is something you want to stay clear from! For this reason, we suggest changing breastfeeding pads the moment they become damp or wet and be sure to wash them after use (if they are reusable) or dispose (if they are disposable). Choosing very absorbent nursing pads will essentially allow you to go longer between having to change the pads that eventually become damp or wet. Remember, bacteria grow in warm and moist surroundings, so nursing pads can fall within this environment if you are not careful. It is essential to ensure the breast pads are dry before throwing them in the laundry basket to wait for wash day. This will prevent the nursing pads from moulding!
